Certain Fields in Indonesia Aimed by US Investors

KOMPAS.com — US investors are very interested in several sectors, namely: education, logistics, infrastructure, telecommunications, agruculture, finance services, and also gas and oil. This is confirmed by the deputy of the US Trade Representative, Demetrios J. Marantis, to Kontan last week.

However, Marantis underlined that the Indonesian government must facilitate access on those sectors to attract investors. Marantis mentions the local content regulation for telecommunications as one factor that discourages foreign investors.

"The more open, the more (foreign) investors would come to provide capital in Indonesia. This is a win-win solution for both countries because it invites funding and absorbs manpower."

Marantis reminded that the OPEC Investment Agreement, which is now in its finalization phase, will provide financial access to potential US investors who are interested in Indonesia.

This discussion on investment took place in the context of the visit of the US President Barack Obama this coming March.
